More about cookies
bullet What is a cookie?

A cookie allows us to customize Web pages. It is a piece of information generated by a Web server (the remote computer that hosts a Web site) and stored in your local computer.

For example, cookies are used as you browse through a virtual shopping mall and add items to your "shopping cart." The cookie keeps track of the items you are going to purchase. The cookies program makes use of information transmitted by the Web server onto your computer so that the information is available for later access.

Essentially, cookies make use of client-specific information transmitted by the Web server onto the client's computer so that the information might be available for later access by itself or affiliated servers.

bullet How do they work?

Cookie technology has two parts that enable information to flow back and forth between your computer and a server. To better understand this interaction, let's look at the relationship between your computer and the Las Vegas Valley Water District server:

First, a cookie is stored on your computer when you request or consent to one of our services. Your Web browser receives a cookie and stores it in a special file called a cookie list. The information (in this case, your consent) is formatted by our Web server, transmitted to your Web browser and then saved on your computer.

The second part of the cookie technology transmits information from your computer to our Web servers. This information is used to customize Web pages that complete your information request. In short, your browser will send the cookie containing your information to our server for processing. The Web server will then customize the page for you according to the contents of that cookie and give the information you requested.

bullet What control do I have?

You may disable the cookies in your Web browser by changing the settings and/or preferences in your browser, but this may impair the functionality of this and other Web sites you visit. You may also set your browser to notify you and get your consent before accepting any cookies. Please refer to the help menu on your Web browser for instructions on how to change these settings.
