Safe
Drinking Water Act
The Las Vegas Valley's drinking water
meets or exceeds all federal Safe Drinking Water Act standards.
In fact, our water is tested more thoroughly and frequently than
most bottled water.
The Safe
Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was passed by Congress in 1974 and
has been amended several times. The Environmental Protection Agency
writes the regulations to carry out the provisions of the act, which
is administered through the State of Nevada.
The purpose of the Safe Drinking Water Act is to
ensure that the drinking water supplied to the public is safe. EPA
sets national drinking water standards that water system providers
must follow.
Testing the water
Nevada is a primacy state, which means that it has been given the
authority to oversee public drinking water systems within the state.
The state is responsible for making sure that all water purveyors
follow the requirements of the SDWA. The EPA monitors the state's
drinking water program to ensure that the state is fulfilling its
responsibilities.
The water supply is analyzed
for:
- metals and other inorganic
chemicals
- radiological constituents
- bacteria
- viruses
- protozoans (such as Cryptosporidium
and Giardia)
- organic chemicals
Results of testing are available in the Water Quality Report and water analysis on that Web page. Also see the Source Water Assessments for r SDWA assessments for Las Vegas Valley water systems.
