In 1999, the Nevada State Legislature passed a bill requiring the Southern Nevada Water Authority to begin adding fluoride to the municipal water supply. In November 2000, Clark County residents voted to continue fluoridation of their municipal water supply with 58 percent of the vote.
Low levels of fluoride—0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L)—occur naturally in Southern Nevada's water supply. Per Nevada Revised Statutes, the Southern Nevada Water Authority adds 0.5 mg/L of fluoride to bring the fluoride level within the required range of to a fluoride level of 0.7-1.2 mg/L in the municipal water supply.
These levels are considerably lower than the federal Safe Drinking Water Act limit of 4.0 mg/L.
Fluoridation of the water supply provides valuable dental benefits. Valley residents pay an average of 4 cents per month to cover fluoridation costs, which total about $800,000 annually.
Note: Some home filtration systems reduce fluoride. To find out if yours does, contact the company you purchased the product from, or call NSF International at (800) 673-8010. NSF is an independent, nonprofit organization that establishes standards for home water treatment systems and devices.
